In rural Kericho County, Samwel Rono and his family have been receiving life-changing support from our partner Oasis of Hope.
Samwel’s health began to decline when he started experiencing back and abdominal pains. This once active farmer experienced a dramatic decline in his quality of life, leaving him dependent on his family for his care. He was eventually diagnosed with cancer and renal disease. The financial strain of treatments, coupled with the family’s limited resources, added to their challenges.
Oasis of Hope, a community organisation supported by Hospice Care Kenya, stepped in, enrolling Samwel’s wife Esther in a caregiver training course while providing volunteer visits from a supportive team comprising a nurse, counsellor, and pastor. These interventions aimed to equip Esther with essential skills and offer holistic support to the entire family.
Esther’s training empowered her to effectively manage Samwel’s condition, providing medication and overseeing check-ups with newfound confidence. Emotional support and counselling during visits helped the family cope with the emotional toll of illness.
The journey of Samwel and his family showcases the transformative impact of compassionate palliative care and its vital role in alleviating suffering and empowering families to face the many challenges with dignity and courage. Through comprehensive support, they found solace, strength, and renewed hope.
