Bonface Omosa, a 67-year-old retired teacher from Kisii County, was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer six months ago. This aggressive disease is often diagnosed late, causing severe symptoms like intense pain, weight loss, and exhaustion, all of which Bonface experienced. Living alone and finding it difficult to walk, Bonface struggled with daily tasks and felt isolated and fearful about the future.

But with support from Hospice Care Kenya, a local palliative care team Vines stepped in. Nurses managed his pain with medication and therapy, assisted with daily tasks, and provided emotional and spiritual support to ease his anxiety. His daughter, who supports him from afar, also received guidance and respite care. This support has had a deeply positive impact on Bonface’s quality of life and his mental wellbeing.

Before palliative care, I felt like I was facing my pancreatic cancer alone. But since starting palliative care, I’ve experienced a profound shift. It’s like I have a team of compassionate allies by my side. I feel seen, heard and supported. Palliative care has given me a sense of comfort, dignity and hope, allowing me to focus on living each day to the fullest, rather than dwelling on what lies ahead.
