Nyeri Hospice - with jacarandas in bloom
This is a mainly agricultural society of small holdings which grow coffee. The local population is poor. Fundraising is a problem, and so is home visiting which involves long journeys over difficult terrain.
Nyeri Hospice was officially opened on 30 September 1995 in premises generously donated rent free by a local businessman. It moved into the premises shown in December 2000
There is no official established system for terminally ill patients, such patients being discharged from hospital when curative treatment will no longer help. So the hospice meets real needs for palliative care in a poor area. Like Nairobi it works on an outpatient basis helping patients who visit its premises, or at their homes. Visits to hospitals are also made, usually just before a patient is discharged as incurable.
The Nyeri hospice has been assisting a group at Nyahururu to set up a hospice. This is progressing and we hope to provide fuller details of this project.
